A note from the Chair

Tēnā koutou katoa,
It is with deep pride and gratitude that I acknowledge the incredible mahi carried out by our Ngāti Tamaterā team over the past month. Through passion, commitment, and collective strength, we have seen a remarkable series of wānanga and kaupapa brought to life—each one reaffirming our vision, our values, and our place as a leading iwi voice locally, regionally, and nationally.
From our rangatahi stepping forward into leadership spaces, to our ringa toi artists breathing life into mātauranga through creative expression, to our powerful presence at Te Taiao and climate change conferences—our whānau continue to lead with purpose, integrity, and innovation.
These wānanga have not only strengthened our internal connections but have built new networks with iwi across the motu, expanding opportunities for collaboration in climate resilience, economic development, and cultural regeneration. This is the legacy we are building—rooted in tikanga, guided by our tūpuna, and powered by the next generation.
We have also recently closed our Expressions of Interest for Interim Trustee positions. We are pleased to share that we received a strong influx of candidates eager to support Ngāti Tamaterā in this next phase of growth, and are happy to announce our two Interim Trustees for Ngāti Tamaterā Treaty Settlement Trust.
Looking ahead, we are proud to be hosting the Hauraki Māori Business Awards 2025—a flagship event that will shine a light on the innovation, resilience, and excellence of our Māori enterprises across the rohe. This will be a defining moment for Hauraki, and a celebration of the economic leadership and entrepreneurial spirit of our people.
Ehara tēnei i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.
This is not the success of one, but of many.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou mō tō kaha, tō manawanui, me tō aroha ki a Ngāti Tamaterā.

Pou Rāhui - Tiakina tō tātou whenua, moana, me te tangata
The Pou Rāhui kaupapa is more than a marine restoration initiative. Recognising the health of the land and the wellbeing of the people are as vital to the kaupapa as the protection and revival of our moana.
Ngāti Tamaterā, Thames-Coromandel District Council (TCDC), and our local community groups are working together to protect and enhance the natural and cultural values of our rohe. By collaborating on initiatives such as rāhui, environmental restoration with Thames Coast Kiwi Care, and sustainable planning such as the Waikawau Boat Ramp upgrade, our partnerships build a shared approach that safeguards the environment, supports community wellness, and upholds the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi with mana whenua at the forefront.
Unfortunately, we are seeing increased vandalism at Waiomu, Tapu, Waipatukahu, Te Mata, and Waikawau, which is tearing up reserves, harming wildlife habitats, and putting public safety at risk.
Our public reserves are
more than just open space - they’re shared taonga for the
whole community. Safeguarding the reserve from vandalism helps keep it a safe, inviting, and thriving for recreation, honouring the mauri and environmental significance for both present and future generations. Our Pou Rāhui cooperative decided that bollards be installed at Waipatukahu to prevent vehicle access, protecting the reserve from further damage and helping to safeguard its natural and cultural values.

This collaboration demonstrates strategic alignment between iwi-led priorities, national advocacy, and local government planning, ensuring that adaptation pathways are both culturally grounded and future-focused.
Our joint approach reflects a commitment to collective impact, drawing together diverse expertise, mātauranga Māori, and resources to address the pressing challenges of climate change. Korowai & Kākahu Wānanga in Tāmaki – Weaving Whakapapa and Whānau Together
We’ve nearly completed our extended korowai and kākahu journey, and the results have been stunning. Many of our whānau have completed their first woven korowai, and are now beginning work on their full-length size korowai. Each strand carries the aroha, whakapapa, and dedication of our tūpuna, with whānau supporting one another as they develop their weaving skills.
The wānanga has become more than just about learning raranga — it’s about creating taonga that embody connection, pride, and identity. With two more wānanga still to come, the excitement is building, and we’re already looking ahead to offering more weaving kaupapa for our whānau in Tāmaki Makaurau. Mā te mahi ka mōhio, mā te mōhio ka mārama!

Harakeke Wānanga in Hauraki – Weaving Culture, Whānau & Wairua
Our weaving journey in Hauraki is in full flight, led by our esteemed experts and knowledge holders Anita Watene and Irene Brady-Harris. Over recent wānanga and tutorials at Te Pai o Hauraki marae, tauira of all skill levels have been immersed in the art and tikanga of raranga – from the sacred harvest (hauhake) of harakeke, to crafting beautiful whāriki iti, kete paraha, and kete taupoki.
Grounded in karakia, whakapapa, and marae-based learning, these wānanga are much more than skill-building – they are living spaces where Oranga Whānau thrives through collective mahi, and Oranga Ahurea is strengthened as mātauranga Māori is passed intergenerationally. Hands-on learning has been paired with deep kōrero on harakeke mātauranga, sustainable harvesting, and the wairua that underpins this taonga practice.
From inspired late-night weaving sessions to the creative hum of tutorials (both kanohi ki te kanohi and online), tauira are not just making kete – they are weaving whānau connection, cultural pride, and enduring skills that will carry forward into homes, marae, and hapū across Hauraki.
Next Steps: The journey continues with upcoming noho wānanga, where we’ll complete current projects, share kai, and deepen our artistry. Stay tuned for more opportunities to join in and strengthen the threads that bind us as Ngāti Tamaterā.
Ngā mihi ki ā tātou kaiako, ngā ringa raupā, me ngā kaitautoko katoa – your passion and dedication keep the weave alive.

Ngāti Tamaterā Partnerships: Inspiring Rangatahi Through Innovation
We’re excited to share our growing collaboration with Pou Rāhui, Sir Peter Blake Trust, and Young Animators as we prepare to roll out a digital technology and innovation programme across Hauraki and Tāmaki schools in 2026.

OWN IT – Helping Whānau into Their First Homes
Kia ora e te whānau,
We’ve just wrapped up two succinct online hui with the Tāmaki Regeneration Programme, supporting whānau who are exploring the OWN IT First Home Ownership programme.
Each hui ran for 30 minutes and gave whānau a real chance to scope out whether stepping onto the housing ladder in Tāmaki is the right move. From clearing debt, building savings, and getting mortgage-ready, through to exploring collective whānau ownership, the sessions were packed with practical advice and honest kōrero.
What whānau got out of it:
- A clear picture of the
1,500 new homes being built across Glen Innes, Point England, and Panmure, Auckland.
- Guidance on whether you’re ready to buy now, or just starting your journey.
- Options for purchasing solo, with a partner, or as a whānau collective.
- Free, no-pressure support available every step of the way.
Feedback from the sessions was inspiring — whānau came away more confident, with practical tools and new possibilities for their housing future.
Next Steps:
If you missed out, don’t worry — the
OWN IT programme is ongoing, and it’s
free to register your interest. There’s no pressure, just potential.
