A note from the Chair

Kia ora e te whānau,
Welcome to our March e-Pānui, where we share the latest kōrero from across Ngāti Tamaterā. We also provide updates on the mahi underway and kaupapa planned for the coming months, along with a snapshot of the activities, engagements and initiatives we have been involved in over the past month.
A key reminder for whānau is the importance of being registered with Ngāti Tamaterā. Registration ensures you can vote in iwi matters, stay informed about opportunities and events, access programmes and benefits, and contribute to the strategic direction of our iwi. Most importantly, it ensures that your voice is counted and included as we shape the future priorities and plans for Ngāti Tamaterā.
We also have many exciting rangatahi kaupapa coming up, so we encourage whānau to make sure your rangatahi are enrolled and connected so they can take part in the opportunities ahead.
Ngā mihi nui.

Pou Rāhui Activation – Splore Festival, Tapapakanga
Our Ngāti Tamaterā Mātai Moana team was proud to be present at Splore Festival, held at Tapapakanga and hosted by Ngāti Pāoa and Ngāti Whanaunga, where we delivered a focused activation to share our kaupapa with the wider community. The festival provided a unique platform to connect kanohi ki te kanohi, introduce our taiohi, and bring visibility to the mahi being carried out across our rohe.
Our team presented an overview of the Pou Rāhui project, highlighting the role of rangatahi in leading and supporting restoration efforts across both whenua and moana. Through kōrero and engagement, we shared the breadth of our work and the importance of building capability within our people to sustain this kaupapa into the future.
A key focus of our kōrero was the restoration of taonga species. We spoke to our kūtai restoration efforts at Te Mata and Tapu, alongside our involvement in pāua restoration and kina barren clearing across Tīkapa Moana and Te Moananui-a-Toi. Our mahi extends to supporting efforts to control caulerpa around Waiheke in tautoko of Ngāti Pāoa, as well as ongoing restoration work in Ahuahu, Tairua, and surrounding islands.
The strong turnout and engagement from festival-goers reflected a growing awareness and support for iwi-led marine restoration. Moments of connection, shared learning, and whakawhanaungatanga reinforced the importance of bringing this kaupapa into spaces where our people gather.
We acknowledge all those who took the time to kōrero with our team, support our taiohi, and stand alongside the vision of restoring the mauri of our moana.
Mauri ora.
Caulerpa Recon Dive – Paritū to Fletcher Bay, Coromandel
Ngāti Tamaterā Pou Rāhui recently undertook a series of reconnaissance dives & scouting activities across the far northern Coromandel, focusing on Paritū, Goat Bay, and Fletcher Bay. Paritū has previously shown the presence of caulerpa, and this trip aimed to revisit and assess current conditions while capturing updated visual records to inform our next steps.
Marutūāhu Skipper led underwater video reconnaissance across key sites, documenting conditions, habitat changes, and indicators of species presence—particularly caulerpa—providing valuable insights to inform ongoing monitoring and future dive and restoration planning. Onshore, Kauri O’Brien supported with site-based kōrero focused on identifying caulerpa, tracking environmental shifts, and maintaining vigilance around invasive species, while Ngākomā Conner brought grounding and leadership that reinforces our commitment to rangatahi development and intergenerational knowledge within the Pou Rāhui space.
This recon forms part of our wider commitment to active kaitiakitanga, linking observation, monitoring, and response across our rohe. It also reinforces the importance of maintaining strong relationships with those who continue to tautoko te rāhui. A hui will be convened in the near future to align our collective efforts and ensure we are moving forward together with clarity and purpose.
Tautoko te rāhui.

Hauraki Games 2026
We were proud to be part of the Hauraki Games 2026, held in Paeroa, with over 2,500 whānau in attendance and 20 marae registered. The day kicked off with a powerful marae hīkoi around the stadium, setting the tone for a day grounded in kotahitanga, hauora, and whanaungatanga.
There was truly something for everyone, from Tapu Ariki and tamariki kēmu, touch, netball, bowls, tug of war and euchre, with strong participation across rangatahi, pakeke, kaumātua and kuia.
Our Ngāti Tamaterā team was kept busy throughout the day, engaging with whānau through iwi registrations and emergency management resilience surveys. Ngā mihi to everyone who stopped by and connected with us. Congratulations to our Grab and Go bag winners, Poroa Robson, Brendon Wilkinson, and Hira Papuni.
It was an incredibly ataahua day, reinforcing the importance of engaging with our whānau, marae, and hapū. We are excited to see the Hauraki Games continue as a bi-annual kaupapa and look forward to being part of it again.
We also look forward to reconnecting with you all at the Hauraki Festival later this year.
General Elections 2026 – Our Voice, Our Future
In 2026, Aotearoa heads to the polls on the 7th of November, and our voice matters.
General elections shape the decisions that affect our whānau every day: housing, education, environmental protection, employment, health, and the future of Te Tiriti partnerships. These policies influence funding for kura, support for rangatahi, protection of our taiao, and the wellbeing of our kaumātua.
Voting is more than ticking a box; it is a way to honour those who came before us and to shape the world our tamariki will inherit. Whether you are voting for the first time or have voted many times before, your participation strengthens our collective influence.
Make sure you are enrolled, informed, and ready.
When we vote, we show up for our whānau, our whenua, and our future.
